A former industrial site in Riga, Latvia, has been transformed into a vibrant residential complex by local studio Sampling. Named Augustine's Garden, the project showcases a unique blend of industrial heritage and modern design. The studio's approach emphasizes the adaptive reuse of existing structures, preserving their character while adding a burst of color and functionality.
The courtyard, once an industrial space, now boasts a cluster of low-rise buildings with a striking contrast between worn bricks and colorful metalwork. The studio's founders, Liene Jakobsone and Manten Devriendt, explain their philosophy: 'We are deeply interested in advancing the paradigm of adaptive reuse and in working with existing built heritage, regardless of its aesthetic or historical value.' This commitment to preserving the site's history while enhancing its functionality is evident in their design choices.
Despite the buildings not being heritage-protected, the studio decided to minimize alterations, focusing on subtle changes. They introduced colorful metal accents to contrast with the worn brickwork, creating a visually appealing and harmonious blend of old and new. The organization of apartments follows the site's existing layout, offering a mix of private entrances and shared spaces, including a courtyard with planted bays and a paved path.
The design team carefully considered the materials, aiming to introduce minimal new elements. They utilized white silicate brick, a material often associated with negative connotations, and reevaluated its role through sensitive architectural intervention. The result is a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary elements, showcasing the potential for even the most burdened materials to be revitalized.
The color palette used throughout the project is a thoughtful selection of pastel green, red, and blue. These colors are reflected in the apartment windows, courtyard furniture, and even the interiors, where they grace curtains, carpentry, and furniture. The street frontage features a pastel green gate, red sills, and a red-metal roof, adding a touch of vibrancy to the existing apartment block.
Sampling, founded by Jakobsone and Devriendt in 2010, has offices in Riga and Ghent. Their portfolio includes other notable residential projects in Latvia, such as a home with a twisting slate roof on the western coast and a barn-like residence in Riga with a corrugated metal roof.
