Johan Oviedo's comeback story is an intriguing one, and it's all about his fastball. The right-hander's return from elbow surgery in 2025 has shown promising signs, especially with his fastball's newfound bite.
While the surface stats might not immediately impress, the Red Sox dug deeper and found reasons to be optimistic. Oviedo had a solid 2023 campaign with the Pirates, accumulating 177.2 innings and finishing 11th in MLB with an impressive plus-11 Run Value on his slider. However, his fastball was the weak link, ranking 178th out of 179 qualified starters with a minus-10 rating. The four-seamer had decent speed (96 mph) but lacked vertical movement.
But here's where it gets controversial... Oviedo's fastball transformation upon his return is remarkable. In 2025, the same pitch that allowed a .275 batting average and .465 slugging percentage in 2023 suddenly became a batter's nightmare, dropping to a minuscule .149/.383. Its Whiff rate skyrocketed from 18.5% to an impressive 31.3%, and its Stuff+ metric jumped from 82 to 115. The Red Sox believe they've struck gold with Oviedo, but there's a catch - the 2025 sample size is small, just 40.1 innings.
And this is the part most people miss... Oviedo's walk rate, already a concern in 2023 (4.2 BB/9), increased to 5.1 in 2025. So, while his fastball has improved dramatically, his control needs work.
So, is Oviedo's comeback a success story or a work in progress? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
