Mirra Andreeva, the sensational victor of the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships, is once again the center of attention as she prepares to defend her title. I felt like people were also very fair to both players, which is very nice to experience when you play in the final of a big tournament." This is the part most people miss: in many tournaments, crowds can lean heavily towards one player, but Andreeva felt a genuine sense of impartiality in Dubai. "Here I felt like both of us received so much support. Yeah, the memories from last year’s final are amazing. I remember them to this day. I’ll try my best to repeat that and experience maybe more or less the same kind of memories."
The spotlight feels different this year, doesn't it? Returning as the champion, Andreeva is undeniably more recognizable. "Compared to last year, obviously now people that maybe are staying here because they see faces of players, they recognize me more," she admitted. However, she embraces this newfound attention. "I don’t mind. I kind of like the attention from people, from media. Yeah, I don’t mind when that happens." The feeling is mutual; seeing her face displayed around the hotel was a special touch. "Of course, the media, it also feels special when I came to the hotel and I saw my face. It’s just nice to see that. That also kind of gives me more motivation to try and play well here and maybe to try and defend the title. When I come next year, my face is there again. Yeah, it was really nice to see."
While Andreeva has proven her mettle by defeating top players like Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina on her way to the title last year, defending it will be no easy feat. Even with notable withdrawals from Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, Andreeva faces a challenging path. She could encounter other rising stars like Victoria Mboko, American talents Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova, and a potential final showdown with the formidable Australian Open champion, Elena Rybakina.
