Mirra Andreeva: Defending Dubai Champion's Experience & Motivation (2026)

The reigning champion is back, and the roar of the Dubai crowd is already on her mind!

Mirra Andreeva, the sensational victor of the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships, is once again the center of attention as she prepares to defend her title. Many will remember her incredible run last year, culminating in a thrilling victory over Clara Tauson in the final. But here's where it gets even more impressive: she didn't stop there! Immediately following her Dubai triumph, Andreeva clinched another major WTA 1000 title at Indian Wells. Talk about momentum!

Now, the 18-year-old Russian is the fifth seed at this year's tournament and is set to begin her campaign in the round of 32. After a well-deserved bye in the first round, Andreeva will face the winner of a compelling matchup between Laura Siegemund and Daria Kasatkina. Who do you think will emerge victorious in that clash and face the formidable Andreeva?

But what about the fans? Ahead of her opening match, Andreeva was reminded of the incredible support she received from her huge Russian following in Dubai last year. When asked if she anticipates a similar reception this time, her eyes lit up with fond memories. "Last year there were so many people watching the match," she shared. "I felt a lot of support. I felt like people were also very fair to both players, which is very nice to experience when you play in the final of a big tournament." This is the part most people miss: in many tournaments, crowds can lean heavily towards one player, but Andreeva felt a genuine sense of impartiality in Dubai. "Here I felt like both of us received so much support. Yeah, the memories from last year’s final are amazing. I remember them to this day. I’ll try my best to repeat that and experience maybe more or less the same kind of memories."

The spotlight feels different this year, doesn't it? Returning as the champion, Andreeva is undeniably more recognizable. "Compared to last year, obviously now people that maybe are staying here because they see faces of players, they recognize me more," she admitted. However, she embraces this newfound attention. "I don’t mind. I kind of like the attention from people, from media. Yeah, I don’t mind when that happens." The feeling is mutual; seeing her face displayed around the hotel was a special touch. "Of course, the media, it also feels special when I came to the hotel and I saw my face. It’s just nice to see that. That also kind of gives me more motivation to try and play well here and maybe to try and defend the title. When I come next year, my face is there again. Yeah, it was really nice to see."

While Andreeva has proven her mettle by defeating top players like Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina on her way to the title last year, defending it will be no easy feat. Even with notable withdrawals from Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, Andreeva faces a challenging path. She could encounter other rising stars like Victoria Mboko, American talents Jessica Pegula and Amanda Anisimova, and a potential final showdown with the formidable Australian Open champion, Elena Rybakina.

So, what are your thoughts? Is Mirra Andreeva a shoe-in to defend her Dubai crown, or will a new champion emerge? Do you agree with her assessment of the Dubai crowd's fairness, or have you experienced different fan dynamics at other tournaments? Let us know your predictions and opinions in the comments below!
