Get ready for a mind-bending revelation! Stranger Things almost took a shocking turn with Vecna, but the Duffer Brothers had a change of heart.
In the thrilling finale, as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) had their final confrontation, a hint of heroism seemed to emerge. But here's the twist: the Duffers initially toyed with the idea of a redemption arc for Vecna, akin to a certain Star Wars villain.
Inspired by The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the Duffers considered drawing from Return of the Jedi as well. In an interview, Ross Duffer revealed why Vecna's path was sealed.
"We debated a scenario where Vecna could have a Billy moment, turning against the Mind Flayer in a Darth Vader-like twist," Duffer confessed. "But as we discussed it, we realized Vecna had gone too far. He had to own his choices and beliefs."
The scene between Vecna and Will left a lingering impression, almost suggesting a change of heart. Like many plot threads in the final chapter, the Duffers left room for interpretation.
"Even though Vecna was shaken by his memories, he was too far gone to turn against the Mind Flayer. We wanted the audience to decide if young Henry chose this path or if the Mind Flayer controlled him," Ross Duffer explained.
Ultimately, the Duffers made the right call by sticking to Vecna's dark path. Killing Henry Creel was necessary, and his death added weight to the story. If he had survived, Joyce's axe would have been a wasted effort.
