The Duffer Brothers Confirm ‘The Talisman’ Netflix Adaptation is No Longer Happening
Stephen King may be working on the third novel, but the long-gestating adaptation from the creators of 'Stranger Things' is no longer moving forward. The Duffer Brothers confirmed to CBR in an interview that their adaptation of 'The Talisman', initially reported in 2021, is no longer at Netflix. Ross Duffer revealed, 'Sadly, Talisman is no longer at Netflix, so we’re not involved.'
Published in 1984, 'The Talisman' is a fantasy epic novel written by Stephen King and Peter Straub. It's one of the few King stories that hasn't been adapted for film or television, despite Steven Spielberg owning the rights since the '80s. The Duffer Brothers were set to team up with Spielberg, with Netflix producing alongside Amblin Entertainment, but they've recently signed a new deal with Paramount and are set to exit Netflix in April 2026.
'The Talisman' follows Jack Sawyer, a twelve-year-old boy who embarks on a quest to save his dying mother. He journeys across the United States and into the mysterious 'Territories', a parallel world filled with wonder and danger. In this realm, Jack encounters 'Twinners', reflections of people he knows on earth, and faces heart-stopping challenges as he seeks the redemptive Talisman.
Although the Netflix adaptation is no longer happening, fans can look forward to the 'Stranger Things' finale on New Year's Eve and the supernatural series 'The Boroughs' next year. This news comes from a horror journalist and critic, who has appeared on PBS and moderated horror panels for various film festivals.
