Interestingly, at that time, Cobain was dating Tobi Vail, a member of Bikini Kill, who had been wearing Teen Spirit deodorant. Hanna's comment was her way of playfully marking Cobain with Vail's scent. Ironically, sales of that deodorant skyrocketed after the song's release, despite Cobain being unaware of its connection.
Hanna recounted that evening: "We ended up in Kurt’s apartment and I smashed up a bunch of s**t. I took out a Sharpie marker and I wrote all over his bedroom wall – it was a rental so it was really kind of lame that I did that. I passed out with the marker in my hand, and woke up hung over." Months later, Cobain contacted her about incorporating what she wrote into his lyrics. Cobain further shared his reasoning for writing the song, stating he felt "disgusted with my generation’s apathy, and with my own apathy and spinelessness," which resonates deeply with the line "I feel stupid and contagious." Bassist Krist Novoselic echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Cobain's disdain for mainstream culture: "Kurt really despised the mainstream. That’s what ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ was all about: The mass mentality of conformity."
Throughout his career, Cobain drew inspiration from various lyricists, but one of the most significant influences was John Lennon of The Beatles. Both artists shared remarkable similarities in their artistic journeys. Dave Grohl, Nirvana's drummer, has remarked on how essential Lennon and his music were to Cobain's development as a songwriter. In a 1993 interview with Rolling Stone, Cobain stated, "John Lennon was definitely my favourite Beatle, hands down. I don’t know who wrote what parts of what Beatles songs, but Paul McCartney embarrasses me. Lennon was obviously disturbed (laughs). So I could relate to that."
Additionally, Greg Sage, the frontman of the influential band Wipers, also left a profound impact on Cobain. Sage's music exhibited a sense of anger and defiance that runs parallel to Cobain's own work. Cobain described Sage as "the romantic, quiet, visionary kind of guy. What more can I say about them? They started Seattle grunge rock in Portland, 1977."

Perhaps the most telling response comes from Cobain himself, who was quite disenchanted with the song's overwhelming fame. He once lamented, "Everyone has focused on that song so much. The reason it gets a big reaction is people have seen it on MTV a million times. It’s been pounded into their brains."
He candidly expressed his frustration: "I can barely, especially on a bad night like tonight, get through ‘Teen Spirit.’ I literally want to throw my guitar down and walk away. I can’t pretend to have a good time playing it."
