The state of healthcare spending in the United States is a pressing issue that demands our attention. In a bold move, the country's healthcare expenditure has soared to an unprecedented $5.3 trillion in 2024, a staggering 7.2% increase from the previous year. This development has sparked intense debate and raised crucial questions about the sustainability and accessibility of healthcare in America.
But here's where it gets controversial: the surge in spending is not solely due to an increase in medical services. In fact, a significant portion of this rise can be attributed to administrative costs, particularly those related to Medicaid and Medicare. These costs saw a massive 14.7% jump in 2024, outpacing the growth in actual healthcare services.
The agency overseeing these programs, the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), attributes this spike to changes in Medicaid coverage post-COVID policies. Medicaid government administration costs alone increased by a whopping 19.8% in 2024, following a 9.2% rise in 2023.
And this is the part most people miss: spending on non-medical and dental professionals, as well as home healthcare, also saw significant increases of 10.8% and 10.2%, respectively. These figures highlight a shift in healthcare spending towards administrative and support services, rather than direct patient care.
Hospital pricing also played a role in the elevated spending, with a 3.4% increase in 2024, the highest rate in over a decade. This contributed to a substantial rise in hospital care services, totaling $1.6 trillion, an 8.9% increase from the previous year.
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) also saw a significant boost in enrollment, with over 30% more people signing up in 2024 compared to 2023. This increase is largely attributed to a special enrollment period that allowed individuals who had lost their Medicaid coverage to enroll in ACA plans.
With healthcare spending now accounting for a substantial 18% of the U.S. gross domestic product, it's clear that this issue is not going away anytime soon.
